Vote Out
The PAP Candidates
You Do Not Want!

The People’s Action Party – the PAP, had been a pillar supporting the building of the nation we call Singapore. The first generation lions like Goh Keng Swee, S Rajaratnam, Toh Chin Chye and Lim Kim San amongst many others, often stood boldly and in self-sacrifice in the frontline to face all kinds of adversities. They led Singaporeans’ battle against colonialism, communism, Konfrontasi, communal violence, poverty and all other threats, with the single aim of ensuring our countrymen having a safe place to call home.

Yet today the endeavors and sacrifices of these pioneers are being unraveled by a group of people. They pretend to be heirs of the PAP legacy, treading in the same footsteps of our heroes, but are in truth mere imitators who are not even worthy to lace the shoes of those before them. For the past 20 years the PAP’s credibility and strength as an institution all Singaporeans have learnt to trust, has been quietly and steadily undone
by abuses of the Group Representation Constituency (GRC) system. Created in 1988 to ensure a minimum level of non-Chinese representation in the parliament, the system has instead been used by the PAP to win clusters of constituencies through the popularity of one or more ministerial-level leaders in each GRC. New PAP electoral candidates no longer have to face voters individually and personally to become Members of Parliament (MPs).
Under the cover of the PAP brand name and its senior leaders, people of untested caliber are sneaked into parliament to claim their seat of power.

Decision-makers with power, but no mandate from the people and no need for accountability to them, can be dangerous to the interests of the public.  The dire consequences of the long-term abuse of the GRC system include:

  • Lee Kuan Yew being able to assume venerated roles as Senior Minister and Minister Mentor even through the last time he contested on polling day was on 3rd September 1988
  • Wong Kan Seng being able to become a Deputy Prime Minister even though he won elections only once during his maiden campaign in 1984.
  • The Cabinet having four full-fledged ministers, Lim Swee Say, Ng Eng Hen, Vivian Balakrishnan and Radm Lui Teck Yew, who have never actually won a single vote from the people?
  • Koo Tsai Kee having entered and now retiring from politics after 20 years without ever having a single vote cast for him.

The PAP always attests that its candidates, who go on to draw astronomical salaries, monthly allowances and pensions as MPs, are of the highest quality because of its rigorous “tea-session” selection process. The slew of bad publicity on its new candidates in this year tells us this is clearly no longer the case.

Undeserving PAP candidates have been able to sneak into parliament on the tailcoats of ministers because the GRC system is a team game. in every team there is a strongman.

But in every team  there is always THE WEAKEST LINK.

The PAP has never lost a GRC. But with the possibility of the Opposition contesting in every seat this time round, every GRC is for the PAP to lose.

Even if the Opposition does not contest in all the GRC, with the power of the internet we now can put every PAP GRC candidate up for vote before Singaporeans in our The Weakest Link contest.

  2. this is such a wonderful game. thank u. the only problem is, do u vote for those u dislike or the guys who r really relatively weak. it's a pity tt not all the ministers' names r in.

  3. True to what you have said. The GRC should stand for Group Representative Cowards as they dare not fight for their votes like the veterans. This is really a let down for all in Singapore. They should have retain all the single seats and let every member be voted in by the people since they are representing us. They should be worthy as they were voted in and not crawl in like cowards.

  8. Vote for freedom and justice for the poor, vote for the party which took us out of poverty from an annual per capita gdp of about US$400 in 1960 to more than US$42,000 in 2010. Do not let all those well educated well to do people who are consumed by jealousy and not backed by arguments and programs for better life, better economy, better security, but only negativity. Lets us not gamble away our future and our achievements of the last 50 years. Dont go down the slippery roads like so many of our neighbours - oppressed by poverty, no justice for the majority poor with a very small minority rich, corrupt politicians, etc etc and freedom and democracy only in name. Singapore's political development is on the right track. We are the most free and democratic nation in Asean, and most just and inclusive society. The fact that we have better and more opposition candidates is a testimony of our development in the right path towards a truly free and democratic and independent nation and society not one manged by the western powers. The well educated and well to do will never be poor! The less endowed, the less educated will be left to suffer the indignity of impoverishment and with so called freedom only in name! Think of the poor and dont let jealousy and ego of the middle and upper middle class disaffected bring our country down.

  9. Remember MBT who stand against CST and lost in Potong Pasir. He only got in via the GRC. with GRC, even looser can get in and then becomes Ministers & then laugh their way to the bank. The result is what you see today with the HDB which, by the way was, one of the greatest program created by the original team of PAP Ministers to ensure that all Singaporean can have a roof over our heads without having to slave for the rest of our lives. Those that brought us to where we were just before this bunch of "Corporate Raiders" got into power. Had MBT continued to stand in SMC, we may still be able to afford a roof over our heads without having to slave for the rest of our lives just so that these bunch of Corporate Raiders can bath in luxury and sit in designers' chair fully air-conditioned their office paid for with our blood, sweat & tears.

  10. Whose blood sweat and tears?

THEY make up just 0.4 per cent of resident taxpayers – but account for a hefty one-quarter of net personal income tax payable.

In all, 3,799 residents, a surge from the 2,751 in the previous year, declared an annual income of above $1 million for Year of Assessment (YA) 2008.

Their net tax payable? $1.36 billion, or more than what’s payable by some 830,000 resident taxpayers who make $150,000 or less a year.

As for the biggest group of taxpayers, the 193,387 with declared income of $30,000 to $40,000, they were liable for net personal taxes of just $38 million, after tax credits and rebates.

These figures from the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore’s (Iras) annual report

Singapore’s tax rate starts at 3.5 per cent, and the top rate of 20 per cent – which kicks in only for chargeable income over $320,000 – remains the lowest in the region after Hong Kong.

  11. I say vote for the opposition to create a system of check and balance. The average Singaporean is facing a difficult time because the PAP had absolute power for so long. As a result, we now face:
    1) High housing costs that takes a life-time to repay and ending with zero CPF for retirement.
PRs are allowed to compete against Sporeans without any diffentiation. MBT refuses to up the lock-in period for PRs to 8 years as proposed thus allowing them to liquidate, make a profit and repatriate to their home country while Sporean males are expected to fight and die here should we be attacked.
    2) Over-crowding in public transport with cost increases a certainty.
    3) Over-crowding in all public spaces thus increasing the stress level of citizens. Flats are getting smaller but costing more.
    4) Depressed wages for Sporeans because imported labour is cheaper - Sporean male worker can't compete on equal terms because foreign imports don't need to take 40 days a year for NS liability and are not paid CPF; married female Sporeans are unwelcomed by bosses because of their long maternity leave compared to foreigners who are mostly single. No wonder there are so many PMETs out of job in an economy that boasts of full employment.
    4) Overall high cost of living while real wages stagnate. High oil prices and imported inflation is an excuse. Sporeans have been facing increasing living costs for the past 5 years or more. The average Sporean family only gets by financially because both husband and wife are working. If you remove one set of income, many households will become insolvent.
    5) PAP government makes use of cheap imported labour to boost GDP which they use to benchmark their bonus. They get 8 months bonus for the double digit GDP growth but did the ordinary Sporean get an average of 3 months...? No?... but who is facing the negative consequences of this great influx?
    6) I feel like a stranger in my own country. At the rate the PAP is increasing the foreigner intake, even though they say they are slowing down, I can foresee that foreigners will outnumber local born Sporeans in 20 years.
    7) When PM boasts about the wafer plant creating jobs for Sporeans, he included PRs in his calculation when he should have shown the jobs created for citizens excluding PRs. Clearly PRs are equal to citizens when it comes to job creation and buying HDB but not NS liabilities plus they have the advantage to cut and run when the going gets rough. Is PAP voted in to look after citizens or PRs?????

Those who still think we don't need an opposition to check the PAP are not foolish to say the least. Time to wake up....

  12. Housing:

The HDB was established in 1960 to tackle the severe housing shortage in Singapore. Many were living in unhygienic slums and crowded squatter settlements. Lack of housing is a consequence as well as a cause of poverty.

Today 85 percent of Singaporeans live in HDB flats with 95 percent ownership. The 5 percent lowest income group who cannot buy or rent their own flats lived in heavily subsidized 1 to 2 room HDB flats at rental as low as S$30 a month.

Instead of shanty towns, we now have 23 HDB new towns all over the island complete with all public amenities, malls and commercial outlets, parks and recreational facilities.

In almost all Third World countries, housing the urban poor in suitable conditions is an uphill battle. The pace of urbanisation, the rate of economic growth, the availability of land for housing, the increase in land prices and inappropriate strategies for urban planning and land appropriation all directly contribute to this problem. Most governments have attempted to implement housing programmes in order to house their urban poor. However, such programmes
have usually met with failure or only limited success. Efforts to improve their quality of life are also often negated by the rapidly deteriorating housing conditions in the slum and squatter areas. The lack of appropriate planning and land policies hinders any attempts to effectively shelter the poor.

To further compound this problem, city-planning and management policies are often at odds with the policies designed to obtain and maintain adequate shelter for the urban poor.

This is the general situation in the majority of Asian countries. However, Singapore has been a notable exception to this rule. Singapore has been able to implement city-planning and urban-management policies that actually benefit the poor, and its housing programme has been successful and admired for producing low-cost, affordable housing on a mass scale. Its present-day situation, however, evolved out of the same problems and conditions that still blight other Third World countries today.

The argument on housing is flawed and intellectualy dishonest. Dangerous for the 85 percent of people who depended and will depend on public housing to vote against their own interest based on a flawed argument! The Government has more than 50 years of track record serving the people, upgrading their living conditions par execllence and an admiration of the world!

  16. Vast majority of voters don’t attend election rally and seldom surf net.

They prefer to watch TV and read Straits Times/Lianhe Zoabao.

Most of them are not aware of those issues raised in the election rallies and your blog.

How do oppositions find ways to reach these voters?

  17. Those people who still worship the PAP because of what the first generation leaders did are blind to present realities.

What has the PAP done for us in the past 5 to 10 years?? The new estates like Sengkang and Punggol are absolute disasters with no amenities, limited transport links... just blocks and blocks of overpriced flats. The flats are cramped together, scaled down in size, poorl ventilated. HDB now is nothing like HDB in the 1970's, 80's or 90's.

    WAKE UP!

  18. Flawed! Flawed! Flawed!

The language betrayed the anger, jealousy and blindness to the truth and realities.

Poor Singapore young people and the weak and poor having to face such personal, emotional, blind prejudice of the disaffected, who will risk everything to vent their selfish irrational emotion without regard or interest for the interest of the country.

And who will be left to pick up the wreckages? The young people!

And who will suffer most from any setbacks for the country and economy?
The weak, the low income group, the poor old people and the poor in general will suffer most!

The well to do will never be poor because they are already well established under the excellent economic growth and development admired by all over the world!

Do they care about the poor ? Thw language tells me the opposite! The poor are vulnerable to exploitation including exploitation in elections for sympathy not with solutions but actually the opposite - putting the lives of the poor and the weak at great risks in fact on the chopping board!

Blindness caused by negative emotions is an oppressive condition! Only intellectual and honesty and respect for the truth can set us free!

  19. Seriously, this site seems to be nothing more than a childish, tunnel-visioned perspective for fueling your self-provoked insecurities.

It seems easier to fault others than to look at yourself.
You want change. But know that change comes with understanding patience and being objective. Not driven by selective truths, funneling in on ridiculous 'problems' and taking on a holier than thou attitude.

Solutions ought to be constructive, not destructive - formed with an open mind and heart. With an intention to create a site such as this, reinforces your immaturity and incapability to take in a bigger picture.

Feed your ego and pride you may, vent your frustrations you may, gather support for your just cause you may - but these only serve to satisfy your shortcomings - to make yourself feel better, not to better yourself.

As such, it seems you have identified yourself as the weakest of the links along with the people who have indulged you in this senseless poll.

Do grow up and try not to belittle others as it exposes your flaws. Try to look beyond yourself and don't tear others down, to build yourself up - this does not imply selflessness but implicates selfishness.

Don't charge your logic with emotions. Be sensible, take responsibility.

On the contrary to what JT said, this is an amazing blog.

All these PAP people have for so long been hiding behind the party's reputation. But even in every family there are black sheep, and these polls reveals exactly who they are.

Ministers and MPs who have done well on the other hand can take consolation of their "poor" performance in this game.

Why do you PAP supporters keep insisting support for Opposition is emotional and support for them is rational? Don't think of yourself as smarter. You are not.

Singapore is sick. We need to diagnose where is the cancer and remove it before it becomes too late.

I cannot believe those people who still defends the pap today.

    You want rational thoughts:
US$100billion were lost in investments by Temasek and GIC in 2008.

The exact amount could be more, or less, we do not know because they refuse to disclose.

How did we lose the money, why did we lose the money, who were responsible, we do not know because they refuse to disclose.

How much exactly have they recovered or lost further since, we do not know because they refuse to disclose.

The government says our CPF money is safe because they are "loaned" to Temasek, who is still liable to repay.
    1. How is Temasek supposed to repay if it no longer has the money?
    2. Is Temasek's inability to repay the real reasons for the constant delay in paying out our retirement funds and the increase of the minimum sum etc?
    3. Shouldn't a rational Finance Minister and PM, stop further loans to Temasek until they have explanations and proof that problems have been rectified? Instead they have put in billions more into Temasek.

As it is, the whole CPF scheme has been turned into a Ponzi fund (remember Madoff??). These are elderly Singaporeans' life-time savings, which they need to rely on for food, medical, housing, transport etc. THEIR MONEY.

Rationally - I say we sack those who have lost our money and refused to be transparent and held accountable.

Emotionally - I say we owe the developed status of modern Singapore to the elderly citizens, and we owe it to them to stand up against those oppressing them.
